Is it normal for a toddler to go through a sudden personality change?

Maybe he had a bad encounter that made him a little bit more cautious. Many things could explain this but it could be as simple as a stage in his life to something as severe as being abused by someone that can make them go into their little shell. Just wait it out and see if he changes. :)
