Can a new face wash break you out?

I normally have absolutely no zits or any blackheads or anything but my mom got me a thing to prevent and treat zits and now I've got three zits that popped up that hurt pretty bad and they're in weird places- two on my cheeks! So basically can that cause this and if so-why?
